Lightning is the result of positive and negative charges building up within a storm cloud. The two charges ignite a huge spark.
Tornadoes are more common in some areas of Earth than others. This is because you must have the combination of moist, warm air like that moving in from the Gulf of Mexico meeting very dry air like that moving down from Canada. Without those conditions, there is no threat of a tornado. For those who live in areas where there is a strong chance of tornadoes, there are sirens that sound when the air begins to rotate. This gives people some time to head for a safe place. As we learn more about the atmosphere, we will be better able to predict these dangerous storms.
